Can someone please explain the Afrigator rankings (in English)

How does the Afrigator ranking system work?How does the ranking system on Afrigator work? Well, it’s a lot like the Olympics. There is a gold medal for each race (like each of our criteria) but the really big deal is the overall winner at the end which takes all the medals from all the different sports and gets an average.

So, here are the Afrigator events:

* Unique visits
* Page views
* Links from blog posts
* Number of blogs that link to you

We take an average of all four factors and then assign a ranking,

For example, if we compare my blog and Stii’s blog:

http://lesterhein.blogspot.com

* unique visits: 10,000 ranking = 1
* page views: 10,000 ranking = 2
* links from blog posts: 5 ranking = 2
* number of blogs that link to you: 3 ranking = 2

http://stii.co.za

* unique visits: 9,000 ranking = 2
* page views: 20,000 ranking = 1
* links from blog posts: 10 ranking = 1
* number of blogs that link to you: 5 ranking = 1

So, even though my blog got more views than Stii’s did, over all Stii has a better average than I do, so he is ranked higher. He gets the gold medal at the end.

To see a more detailed technical explanation of how the Afrigator ranking system works, hop over to Stii’s blog and have a look at his post on the matter.

I really hope that this clears things up a bit. If you have any more questions, please let us know in the comments form below and we’ll try our best to help.

Till next time, keep on blogging,

Lester, Stii and Justin

    Great, Now I know why the ranking differs from Amatomu. Makes total sense now. Although I still see a difference, might just be me though, of reported traffic. That is visitors and page view.

    Hi Robert – yes you would see a difference. If you mean a difference between say us and Amatomu then the difference is due to the fact that we use completely different tracking methods.

    If you’re referring to your stats engine versus say ours then again there would be a difference. In fact, it doesn’t matter what you use to measure traffic, they’re all going to be different.

    The thing with us though is that while there may be differences everyone on Afrigator is being measured on the same level. So while we may report a slightly lower (or higher) page view count than your own systems you can rest assured that everyone else is being judged in the same way.

    At the end of the day everyone’s competing in the Olympics on a level playing field – we don’t allow doping scandals in our Olympic events :)

    Thanks Justin,

    Good response. I like the reference to Olympics and doping scandals, very good

    I’m glad that people do – sometimes I forgot how to explain it in easy steps ;)

    Does commenting on other blogs affect your ranking?

    Just wondering :)

    Good one, Les, BUT it does appear as though you guys miss quite a lot of stuff.

    For instance, I discovered by accident that Emil Jung’s blog had linked to mine in a post sparked by a contribution I made there. This link is not shown by the Gator on my dashboard (under Blogs giving you link love).

    Same thing with at least four other blogs that link to me that seem to never have been picked up by the ‘gator.

    Is there a reason to this. The blogs I refer to are all listed on Afrigator and carry your badge.

    Just been playing on my mind, this, making me wonder if I am being prejudiced at all in terms of my ranking as a result.

    Hey Denford – this sounds like an anomaly that we could need to sort out. In theory, if you are linked to from another Afrigator member we should pick that link up. I’ll get Stii to check into your blog tomorrow so we can make sure we’re not missing anything.

    Also, I 100% guarantee that we don’t prejudice ANY blog in any way. It’s not in our interest to do this and we want the ranking to be free and fair on all fronts. If you guys ever notice anything that looks abnormal you should contact us on support@afrigator.com and we’ll try and resolve it ASAP!!!
